Prof. Pantelis Papadopoulos is the Director of the Metropolitan Hospital Ophthalmology Clinic and the Advanced Ophthalmic Microsurgical Unit.
For a number of years he has served as the President of the Hellenic Society of Intraocular Implant and Refractive Surgery (HSIOIRS).
He has been a Visiting Professor of Ophthalmology at the SMU (Slovak Medical University) since 2012.
Additionally, he is the President of the Editorial Board of the magazine «Ophthalmic Surgery»
Advanced Microsurgery
Prof. Pantelis Papadopoulos is highly specialized in cataract, glaucoma and refractive surgery with or without the use of a Laser, as well as in the correction of presbyopia, in corneal transplants and in the surgical reconstruction of the anterior segment with an artificial iris.
He is the first Greek and one of the first 15 European Ophthalmologists to receive the title FEBOS-CR from the European Society of Cataract Surgery and Refractive Surgery (ESCRS) and the European Board of Ophthalmology (EBO).
This title is given exclusively to ophthalmic surgeons who are highly specialized and demonstrate excellence of knowledge in cataract and refractive surgery. A breadth of surgical experience and passing the FEBOS-CR examination are minimum requirements for the acquisition of this title.
He received his doctorate from the Medical School of the University of Leipzig in Germany. He has since partaken in multiple educational seminars in Europe and the USA.
In 1992 he founded the Ophthalmo-Check Advanced Diagnostic, Therapeutic and Research Eye Center in Palaio Faliro, Greece. He initiated collaborations with the “Ophthalmos” Institute and “Hygeia” hospital, where in 1993 he began carrying out refractive surgery operations for the correction of myopia, being amongst the first in Greece to do so.
In 1997, he performed a new glaucoma operation for the first time in Greece, the deep sclerectomy procedure. Within that year he also inserted the first foldable accommodating intraocular lenses in the country.
He has been the director of the Metropolitan Hospital Ophthalmology Clinic since February 2002, around the same time he received his European Diploma in Ophthalmology (FEBOphth)
He has been a Visiting Professor of Ophthalmology at the SMU (Slovak Medical University) since October 2012.
In December 2012 he and his surgical team performed the world’s first quadruple operation for the restoration of the anterior chamber with great success.
Prof. Pantelis Papadopoulos was announced as honorary member of the world-class Barraquer Ophthalmogy Institute in 2006, in recognition of his contributions to ophthalmology.
Educational Work
Throughout his career, Prof. Pantelis Papadopoulos has made significant contributions in the education of his peers, teaching them, ophthalmologists in training and medical students advanced techniques in ophthalmic microsurgery.
In 2007 he was elected President of the Hellenic Society of Intraocular Implant and Refractive Surgery (HSIOIRS). He served as the President till 2011 and then took on the role of Vice-President since 2019.
Since 2000, he has been the President of the Editorial Board of the magazine «Ophthalmic Surgery», which is disseminated to over 2,500 ophthalmologists in Greece and Cyprus.
Over the last 15 years he has also served as the President of the Organizing Committee of the Annual International Congress of the HSIOIRS. As President he has organized three Pan-European Conferences in collaboration with the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (ESCRS).
In 2013 he organized the 1st Eastern European Ophthalmic Summer Academy with High Communication Wet Labs in Athens.
The Professor’s clinical and research interests lie mostly in advanced cataract refractive surgery and the implantation of innovative intraocular lens (IOL) products, particularly IOLs for the correction of presbyopia and astigmatism. The results from these clinical studies have been presented in numerous conferences in Greece and abroad.
He has been invited in a great number of conferences over his career, has given over 250 lectures and participated in various expert panels. Additionally, he has written a number of articles for ophthalmology textbooks.
Prof. Pantelis Papadopoulos was announced as honorary member of the world-class Barraquer Ophthalmogy Institute in 2006, in recognition of his contributions to ophthalmology.
He speaks 5 foreign languages (English, German, Turkish, Italian, French). Music is a hobby of great interest for him.
